Answers

  1. Am I eligible for transfer credit/exemption/waiver for Math 163?
    • If you have one course from list A AND one course from list B below, you may use this combination in lieu of Math 163. At Camosun, because it isn't a single course-for-course match we use the term "in lieu of" rather than calling it transfer credit or an exemption or waiver.
    • List A
      • Principles of Math 12
      • MATH 093: Provincial Mathematics 2
      • MATH 100: Calculus 1
      • MATH 105: Algebra and Precalculus
      • MATH 107: Applied Precalculus
      • MATH 108: Applied Calculus
      • MATH 115: Precalculus
      • MATH 173: Basic Technical Math 2
      • MATH 174a: Math for Electronics 3
      • MATH 185: Math for Civil/Mech 1
    • List B
      • ELEX 164: Digital Logic
      • MATH 109: Finite Mathematics
      • MATH 126: Basic Discrete Math
      • MATH 189: Math for Civil/Mech 3
      • PHIL 212: Introductory Symbolic Logic 2
      • STAT 116: Elementary Statistics (formerly MATH 116)
      • STAT 216: Applied Statistics (formerly MATH 216)
      • STAT 218: Probability and Statistics 1 (formerly MATH 218)
    • Please note that a D grade in any of these courses is not acceptable. Students trying to use a D grade will not be granted an "in lieu of" and will be advised to take Math 163 instead.
  2. Okay, I'm eligible. What do I do now?
    • Contact Academic Advising with a statement like "I believe I can use my Principles of Math 12 together with MATH 109 in lieu of MATH 163" and they will start the process with you. It's best to email from the email address that is on your student record to prove your identity, since you will not be there in person to show your ID.
  3. I have courses from other institutions that are equivalent to those listed in answer #1. What do I do now?
    • Contact Academic Advising and ask for transfer credit for those courses. After you have been officially awarded Camosun transfer credit and those courses correspond to the ones in answer #1 above, then you can proceed to the steps in answer #2 above.
  4. I have courses from other institutions, but I don't know if they correspond to the courses listed in answer #1. What do I do now?
    • If the courses are from an institution in BC, you can consult the BC Transfer Guide to see what Camosun courses correspond to the ones from your institution. Make sure that you look up the credit from your institution to Camosun, because the transfer agreements don't always work both ways. Also, make sure that you check that the date that you took the course falls within the Effective Date range specified in the Transfer Guide. If your courses correspond to those courses listed in answer #1 above, then proceed to answer #3 above.
    • If your courses are from an institution outside BC, then you'll have to apply for transfer credit as in answer #3 above and then check to see if you meet the criteria from answer #1 above. If you like, you can show me your transcript (I'll likely end up asking you to send me detailed course outlines for a definitive answer) and I can give you an idea of what credit you might be eligible for.
  5. If I'm successful, how will Math 163 show up on my transcript?
    • If your "in lieu of" request is successful, a note will be made in your file and you will be sent a letter informing you of the result. Please note that this note will not show as MATH 163 on a transcript, as it is a note in the system allowing other courses to be used in place of the 163. You will not be granted credit for 163 as well.
    • One further note on using the "in lieu of" to meet MATH 163 pre-requisite requirements for other courses: CAMLINK will not automatically recognize the "in lieu of", as it is a note only on your student record. Therefore, when the pre-requisite checker is on, you will have to register in person. Please tell the person at the registration desk that you have "in lieu of" credit for Math 163, so that person knows where to look in your record to check for the pre-req.
