Review Materials
Rusty? Has it been a little while since you've done Math 11 or equivalent? For the chapter on trigonometry (Chapter 5), be sure to remind yourself about simplifying radicals using our Radical Review. For the chapter on exponents and logs, be sure to remind yourself about all the exponent rules using our Exponent Review.
Here's a handout on Completing the Square.
Geometry Supplement
Here are Chi-Ming and Raymond's notes on geometry:
- G1: Triangles
- G2: Similar Triangles
- Answers to Selected Exercises
- Exercises Only (handed out in class)
Further Web Resources
Exponents and Logs
- The Rule of 72 and why it works – why the rule of thumb for compound interest works (divide 72 by the yearly rate to get the doubling time)
Polynomial Functions
- Want to solve the equation of a cubic polynomial exactly? Try the Cubic Formula, which is long and messy but gets the job done. Quartic equations also have a long and messy algorithm for solution, as described in link, but Quintic equations can not be solved exactly using a finite number of arithmetic operations, as proved in the fabulously-named Abel's Impossibility Theorem
Trig
- Discovering Trigonometry, particularly the links to Java-script graphs of sine, cosine and tangent, and the effects of frequency and amplitude.
- Trigonometry Online Quizzes
Conic sections
- Animation for how to draw an ellipse
